In 1997, the Brazilian government signed the Cartagena Declaration, that stresses the commitment of signatory countries in recognizing that children’s rights are the basis of human rights.
The Growing Up Right program is a joint and systematic campaign developed by the Interstate Tobacco Industry Union (SindiTabaco), associated companies and the Brazilian Tobacco Growers’ Association (Afubra), which is intended to prevent and fight child and adolescent labor in the cultivation of tobacco, through raising the awareness of integrated farmers and society, as well as social projects sponsored by the program’s sponsoring institutions, with the approval and participation of both national and international public and private organizations.
